Thyroid Antibodies are important markers to assess especially if you suspect thyroid abnormalities. Generally, the presence of thyroid antibodies suggests the possibility of an autoimmune thyroid disorder and the higher the level, the more likely that is. Levels of autoantibody that rise over time may be more significant than stable levels as they may indicate an increase in autoimmune disease activity.
A physician will generally order thyroid antibodies if they see an abnormal TSH or free T4 test results. Additionally, a physician may also order a comprehensive thyroid assessment through NutriPATH test code 1114 if signs and symptoms of a low or high level of thyroid hormones or the presence of a goiter, especially if the cause is suspected to be an autoimmune disease.

Thyroid Problems
Thyroid abnormalities are one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting millions worldwide. Thyroid hormones are well known for their role in basal metabolic rate, development and growth. Therefore, it is understandable that abnormalities in the level of thyroid hormones can lead to a diverse array of symptoms involving the heart, brain, skin and reproductive systems. Chronic stress can deplete thyroid function as the stress hormone cortisol inhibits thyroid function. Autoimmune disease of the thyroid can cause both hypo and hyperthyroidism, as the antibodies can either block or stimulate the thyroid receptors.
