An enteric panel with Shiga toxin (Stx) testing is used to detect the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in stool samplesSTEC is a type of bacteria that can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, sometimes leading to severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The test identifies the presence of Stx or the stx gene, which are virulence factors of STEC.

What is an Enteric Panel?

An enteric panel is a group of tests used to diagnose gastrointestinal infections. These tests typically include the detection of various bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause diarrhea and other digestive issues. The STEC portion of the panel specifically targets E. coli strains that produce Shiga toxin.

What are Shiga Toxins?

Shiga toxins (Stx) are a family of potent toxins produced by certain E. coli strains and Shigella dysenteriae type 1. These toxins are responsible for the damage caused by STEC infections, particularly in the intestines and kidneys. There are two main types of Shiga toxins, Stx1 and Stx2, which can be further subdivided into subtypes.

Why is STEC testing important?

STEC infections can range from mild diarrhea to severe, life-threatening illnesses like HUS. HUS is characterized by kidney failure, anemia, and low platelet counts. Identifying STEC is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment, and also to prevent outbreaks.

How is STEC detected?

STEC is typically detected through stool sample analysis using various methods:
