An enteric panel with Shiga toxin (Stx) testing is used to detect the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in stool samples. STEC is a type of bacteria that can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, sometimes leading to severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The test identifies the presence of Stx or the stx gene, which are virulence factors of STEC.
