The Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) 1 and 2 Antibody Test is a blood test that detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to infection by the herpes simplex viruses. HSV-1 is commonly responsible for oral herpes, causing cold sores or blisters around the mouth, while HSV-2 is primarily linked to genital herpes, leading to sores or ulcers in the genital and anal areas. The test measures two types of antibodies: IgM and IgG. IgM antibodies are produced early in an HSV infection and typically indicate a recent or active infection, appearing soon after the virus is contracted. IgG antibodies develop later and signify past exposure or infection, remaining in the body for life once the person has been infected. This test provides valuable information to help determine whether an individual has a recent or past HSV infection, assisting in appropriate treatment and management, particularly for those at risk of complications.
