The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) test is a blood test that detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to EBV, the virus responsible for infectious mononucleosis and linked to certain cancers and autoimmune diseases. This test identifies antibodies to the viral capsid antigen, a protein forming the virus’s outer shell. The presence of VCA IgM antibodies indicates an acute or recent infection, as they typically appear within the first week of symptoms. VCA IgG antibodies, which emerge around the onset of symptoms and remain in the body for life, signal either a current or past infection, providing long-term immunity. This test is an essential tool for determining whether an EBV infection is recent, ongoing, or occurred in the past, offering crucial insights for diagnosis and effective management.
