About Vitamin D
As many people now know vitamin D helps to maintain strong and healthy bones, it does this by retaining calcium. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased risk for many common and serious diseases, including some common cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. Studies suggest that exposure to sunlight which enhances the production of vitamin D in the skin, prevents many chronic diseases. Vitamin D is essential for the formation of growth and health of bones. Additionally it is necessary for normal calcium absorption and immune function. It also improves muscle strength and helps reduce inflammation.
Taking Vitamin D Supplements Without Testing For Vitamin D Deficiency
Many people are encouraged to take vitamin D supplements to prevent vitamin D deficiency and more so to prevent osteoporosis, this is not recommended as doing so can do more harm that good, this is because Vitamin D when taken in supplements has the potential to be toxic to the body. If your Vitamin D levels are ok, then taking vitamin D supplements can be harmful therefore testing your vitamin D levels is the best way to know if you need supplementation or not.
Having excessive vitamin D as a result of supplementation can also cause excess calcium uptake which can cause many health problems including those that lead to serious diseases such as calcification of the arteries leading to heat attack and stroke.
