How The Allergy Test Works
The IgE inhalants allergy test is measuring the IgE antibodies primarily found in the mucous secretions, this test is ideal for airborne allergy reactions that occur about or immediately after exposure to the food allergen such as within a few minutes to a few hours. The IgE inhalant allergy test is regarded as a Type 1 immediate hypersensitivity reaction, the antibodies of IgE have an immediate reaction within 15 minutes and as can also cause the reaction to be 4-6 hours after inhalation of the allergen.
IgE antibodies that are specific for the allergen bind onto immune cells called mast cells and basophils. This initiates the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from these cells. The allergic IgE response is comprised of not only an immediate event but in many cases a late event as well.
It is recommended that IgE inhalant allergy testing is only performed for infants greater than 18 months of age.
