Leukaemia is a type of cancer that affects white blood cells and can present as acute myeloid leukaemia, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, or chronic myeloid leukaemia. All blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. In leukaemia, large numbers of white blood cells are released before they maturate as blast cells which are less effective at fighting infections.
